Ivy to Ian

My sweet ten year old sleeps beside me
Fitfully
It’s been a rough week in our house
Sickness abounds
But as she lays her sweet head closer to me
She’s unconscious but somehow pitiful
I lay my hand upon her
Hot to the touch
But better
Thank goodness
I feel I’m blessing her
Sweet girl
I’ve known you since you surprised us
2 lines? What!
How can I see you as the ten year old you are
And hold close to the wee little thing you were?
Sometimes I look at you and feel so much love bursting through
Fighting to get to you in the NICU
Started walking before she was one
Wasn’t about to let her older brother have all the fun
Oh and then she was three she used to be “the machine”
Her love of climbing any and everything!
Her undying love for her brother
Watching her friendships burn bright
Her smile and tiny but tight hugs have lasted throughout time
They always will
As she starts getting older and older I love the one she was, is, and will be
I’m fascinated by what she could become
Such strength and stubbornness
Will scare some unfit suitors
Who will break through and show their face at our door?
They will love her
And she will go
Mysteries of life to unfold in her open hand
Like petals of a flower
Which she draws so well
Will art always have her heart?
Time will tell
But for me
Time seems split in threes
Who she was, is, and will be
I see them clearly
And
I adore them all
And keep them in my heart
For eternity
